On 9 February RSG news broadcast the following item in Afrikaans which, translated, reads as follows:
“According to official statistics, more or less 65 000 sexual crimes were committed in South Africa last year. According to police estimates, only one out of thirty-six cases of rape are reported. Recent research has shown that more than a quarter of South African men admit that they have raped a woman or a girl.”
A complaint was lodged with the BCCSA, and the Tribunal held that the words in italics amounted to an unfair generalisation which should have been supported at least by facts stating where and by whom the research was conducted, how many men were included in the research and what their age was.
The complaint was, accordingly, upheld. The SABC was directed to publish a summary of the Tribunal’s decision.
