Complaint about a joke on the “Rude Awakening” programme that is suggestive of child abuse.
Although the complaint is that the joke was inappropriate and although the broadcaster admitted that it was in bad taste, it is not within jurisdiction of Tribunal to make a finding on appropriateness or on bad taste. The duty of the Tribunal is to protect children. The test here is whether the broadcast contravened clause 16.1 that prohibits the broadcasting of material that promotes violence based on age. Finding of Tribunal that although broadcaster steered close to the wind, there was no contravention of the Code. Broadcasters are warned to be wary of broadcasting material that might be suggestive of the sensitive issue of child abuse.
