A complaint was lodged against jokes made by Jeremy Mansfield concerning the “Red Tide” on 8 radioApril in the programme “Rude Awakening”.  The complaint was that fun was poked at  a news item about the Red Tide which was plaguing the Western Cape Coast: the jokes, the complainant argued, either blatantly or subtly compared the Red Tide to menstruation.

The BCCSA held that although the complainant was correct that the comparison had been made, the jokes were not so explicit or lengthy that they could be regarded as indecent or obscene in terms of the BCCSA Code.  Mr Mansfield’s co-host was also quick in interrupting the theme and thereby switching the subject.  For some listeners the jokes were probably in poor taste, whilst others probably regarded them as part of the “rude” awakening, which is a programme directed at adults.
