Case No - 11 - 2011 - Heart 104.9 FM - Hate Speech PDF Print Email

This is a complaint about sexually degrading remarks in a sports programme where the presenter went overboard in idolising Jacques Kallis, a cricket hero. The statement that upset the Complainant was the following: “[I]f tonight you're about to consumate your marriage on your honeymoon and Jacques Kallis wants first dibs, you should stand aside and let him have your wife”.  It was found that this statement amounted to the strengthening of an attitude of male entitlement: that women were there for the taking, as it were.  The statement was found to be seriously degrading to women and therefore to constitute a contravention of clause 4(1) of the Code of Conduct.  The Broadcaster was reprimanded.  The complaint was upheld.
